Though it is a book that has been on the censored list, Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is a worthy novel to continue in the high school curriculum due to its accurate portrayal of the time period. The pie by Gary Soto tells the story of a six years old boy. This boy lets the temptation get the best of him leading him to steal a pie. He struggles with the guilt throughout the story feeling as if he has disappointed everyone even though know one knew. Soto uses figurative language such as personification, allusion, metaphors, and similes to entertain the reader. His main intention is entertain but I can argue that he wrote the story to inform as well.

In the book “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros, the main character Rachel is an eleven-year-old girl hence the title. However, today is her birthday and she is super excited to go home and celebrate her turning eleven. But when her teacher and peers turn on her and falsely accuse her of owning the ugly red sweater, Rachel's day takes a turn for the worst. Where our story takes place in Rachel’s school, where her teacher blames her for owning a red sweater that they found laying on the classroom’s floor. The main idea of this text is Rachel is a pushover around her peers and teachers.

In the story "Marigolds" by Eugenia Collier there are several figurative language sentences and symbols that have meaning to the overall theme of the story. "Everything was suddenly out of tune, like a broken accordion." (Collier 11) This means that Lizabeth is explaining everything she is going through and how her life and emotions are. She uses an accordion to describe this because an accordion is a fun and upbeat instrument and a "broken accordion" is the complete opposite.

In Eugene Collier’s short story, Marigolds, the author used figurative language and diction to convey a serious and angry tone on poverty. Marigolds, a tale full of voice elements, addressed the theme of poverty with indignation and sincerity. Though Lizabeth, Collier narrated the story; it was about a girl recalling her life during World War 2 in a poor family. In the first example of voice element, Lizabeth described poverty as “the cage in which we all were trapped” (Collier 1). She uses this metaphor to explain how penury anchored her family.

The novel, “The Book Thief”, written by Markus Zusak shows the nature of human beings and their actions during what was arguably the most catastrophic time in human history, the reign of Nazi Germany. He demonstrates the impact that words have had on the the nation, the world, and a young girl named Liesel Meminger. However, to portray this, he utilizes a narrator which can explain events in a way no other living being can- ‘Death’. Throughout the novel, Death describes the life-changing events that Liesel is forced to undergo, but he highlights how she is able to power through them and achieve an outcome so great. Most of all, he explains how is eventually able to understand the true meaning of words, and how they have the capacity to be so simple, yet unimaginably powerful.

In the short story “Eleven”, Sandra Cisneros manages to convey a powerful message about growing up from the perspective of an eleven year old. The story starts out with Rachel, the protagonist, who is turning eleven today. It starts out with her at school while she's in math class.

In her essay, Eleven, Sandra Cisneros narrates the story of Rachel’s ruined eleventh birthday. Cisneros uses this to characterize Rachel as insecure about her age, shy and sensitive, especially when talking to adults, and intelligent, as shown in her description of the different ages people have within them and how they act can be attributed to them feeling a certain age. This is done through the use of figurative language, syntax, and diction. Rachel’s insecurity in regards to her age can be seen in her incident with Mrs. Price, during which she says, “I wish I didn’t have only eleven years rattling inside me like pennies in a tin Band-Aid box”(Cisneros, 29-30).

In the beginning of Sandra Cisneros’s short story, she states that when a person becomes an age older they will not feel a difference. The character Rachel explains that in different situations, for example, “Like some days you might say something stupid, and [you will feel ten]” a person might feel different from their actual age. She then competes growing old to layers of an onion, rings of a tree, wooden dolls that fit inside each other because, according to her, “that’s how being eleven years old is”.
