The Gun Control Debate in the United States Republicans vs. Liberals The ineffectiveness of gun control is quite evident in the United States. Gun rights have been an ongoing social battle for many years (Kopel). People will always find a way to gain access to weapons if the person wants one badly enough. The United States is fast approaching the halfway mark in favor of stricter gun laws; however, the nation still questions the effectiveness of gun control. Republicans support the right to own, use, and carry guns as stated in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution (Kopel). Republicans also believe it is an individual’s right to protect family and property through gun ownership. Gun laws should be left to the individual states …show more content…
There have been previous laws like The Brady Law instituted in 1993 that made a federal background check a requirement before an individual could purchase a gun (Kleck). Federal background checks are still being used today and the Legislature has agreed to pass an amendment that provides more funding for even stronger background checks. In 1994 President Clinton passed a law that banned semi-automatic weapons for civilian use (Kleck). This is still an ongoing issue today because semi-automatic weapons are readily available and have yet to be banned. There is no question that both parties are searching for answers, but the question remains how will the House make all Americans …show more content…
Citizens need to stand up and not take the blame for other individuals who choose to inflict harm. Law-abiding citizens should not be penalized for the actions of a few deranged people. It is true some weapons do not belong in the hands of untrained people, and the National Rifle Association has been instrumental in pushing for responsibility and safety on the part of gun owners without imposing too much on the Second Amendment right (Kopel). Critics such as David DeGrazia of George Washington University argue that private ownership of handguns leads to more social harms than it prevents (Hsiao and Bernstein). David DeGrazia proposes a moderate control of guns meaning that only individuals with a need for self-protection be allowed to own a gun and only after a complete course in safety (Hsiao and Berstein). DeGrazia also believes that owning a gun increases the likelihood that a person will be killed in their own home whether accidentally or intentionally (Hsiao and Berstein). The Democratic Party believes that stricter background checks will deter guns from being purchased by the wrong people. That might be true, but will it stop a violent person from committing a
Within American ideals, laws, and opinions concerning gun control, firearms continue to be a critical matter in the government, schools, and communities. Notably, the nation 's government has attempted, and or passed, laws that inhibit guns in some kind of way. Now, generally the issue of gun control is viewed differently by either political parties; liberal Democrats tend to sway towards the side that is in favor of gun control laws, while Conservative Republicans have opposing views about these ideas. Therefore, since our nation is executively governed by Barack Obama, a democrat, the concern around firearm laws have intensified over the past eight years he has been in office.
Many people may believe that the level of development in society is fast approaching a golden era, where a majority of conflicts will be resolved as a result of the growing awareness of societal problems and the assertiveness of people around the world. Unfortunately, due to the growing gaps between societal ideals and reality, society continues to be swamped with numerous social, political, and economic issues that negatively impact a significant number of people and their communities today. These issues arise due to a variety of factors, sometimes beyond society’s control, which results in great confusion about what is right and wrong, and if there is anything possible at all to resolve these conflicts. Specifically in the United States,
Gun control is not of one issue, it is of many. To some people gun control is a rights issue, to others it is a crime issue. Yes, a United States citizen may have the right to bear arms under the second amendment of the Constitution, but it does not mean that every United States citizen should have the ability to own a firearm. Those that have taken advantage of the right to bear arms should not be allowed to own a firearm. Within each of these issues there are those who want more gun control legislation and those who want less.
By educating the public, gun responsibility and safety will increase and lower gun crime without compromising gun ownership. Implementing mandatory gun safety courses for first time buyers and a safety test for current owners, Americans can buy guns and also be educated in the responsibility that comes with gun ownership. This measure could potentially save local governments money as well since law enforcement would not need to spend time prosecuting gun violators due to negligence. In addition, gun education would also reform the way people think of guns, from the stereotypical gun toting violent individual to the educated, informed gun owner. The answer is not to limit our freedom, but to educate the responsibilities
Gun control endangers American’s constitutional right to bear arms. Politicians and civilians alike mistakenly think that revoking our constitutional right to keep and bear arms will ensure the end of gun violence in our country. Taking away our guns by criminalizing the purchase or ownership of guns will not keep weapons out of the hands of violent criminals. If we criminalize guns the violent gun-slinging criminals we worry about would continue to purchase them illegally through the black market. Marginalizing our right to bear arms endangers civilians due to the fact that those laws only affect law abiding citizens, rendering them defenseless.
These debates emphasize the need to strengthen the gun control laws that are currently in place, which are meant to regulate the buying, selling, and owning of gun. Lastly, even though gun control goes against the right given to individuals by the second amendment, having stricter gun control laws is beneficial for the safety of the nation because gun control can significantly decrease the number of deaths that occur because of mass shootings and gun control
in past years. both parties have found common ground on the subject. Nearly 90% of both parties agree on preventing the mentally from purchasing guns. (Pew Research, 1) Since the presence of more domestic gun related violence being linked with mental illness Americans agree that gun violence is a very big problem and want to work towards amending the issue. Both Parties also agree on banning gun purchases from people on the no fly list (Pew Research, 1) Due to the amount of terror attacks that have occured since the 90s.
Different parts of the country have separate views regarding gun control laws. Such as, Americans from the south may say current gun control laws are fine, and Americans in the north may say they need to be stricter. Some would even say guns need to be banned all together. If an individual’s ultimate goal is to commit bodily harm to someone, they are going to do it whether they have a gun or not.
According to the Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, the CDC state there are approximately 30,000 individuals killed by guns each year across America, which includes those killed by accident, suicide, or homicide (Gun Control). In addition to the vast amount of people killed by guns each year, there are also numerous gun related incidents that occur each day that don’t result in death. Due to the frequency of these occurrences, Democrats call for stricter gun control. To lower the amount of gun related incidents the Democrats want a more intensive background check before a firearm can be purchased.
Terrorism, public shootings, and suicides have sparked the fuse that is gun control. Our government has persistently tried to pass laws and regulations to restrict gun ownership, but not all have succeeded. Looking at the history
Gun rights are backed up by the Constitution which is the foundation of our country, gun control wouldn 't stop crime, and the use of background checks plays a vital role when purchasing firearms. The second amendment gives citizens of the United States right to own weapons. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (United States Constitution - Bill of Rights - Amendment II ). The District of Columbia law bans gun possession by making it a crime to carry an unregistered
It may seem at times that laws are being made behind the backs of others, however, those who want to be involved and look for answers will find them. On the other hand, some believe that there is a choice when it comes to owning a gun, and many prefer owing one as opposed to not having one at all. Nonetheless it's these same people who believe that gun violence is an issue and should be taken care of. Seven out of ten people surveyed in various communities believed that gun violence is increasing at such a rate that more massacres are to occur. If even those who owns guns are beginning to fear for their lives, its time a few changes are made.
Guns are not meant to be banned. Background checks need to be enforced now that this has come to be such a huge ordeal. Keeping everyone and their safety in mind is very important. Communicating in ways to compromise that gun control is not for our government needs to be addressed.
In today’s society, one of the most alienating issues in American politics is gun control. More specifically, the issue is whether or not guns should be banned in the United States. Some people would say that guns should be banned because it would reduce crime as a whole and keep citizens safer. These people, enthusiasts of stricter gun laws, fear being safe in their country where there are so many people who have access to guns. Opponents of this argument, however, also fear losing safety.
The pro-gun control supporters believe that having stronger gun control laws, increased background checks, mental screening, etc.. will help prevent shootings, murders, and gun related accidents. Many pro- control supporters believe that the second amendment doesn’t mean exactly what it says, they believe that the Second Amendment was intended for militias; that gun violence would be reduced; that gun restrictions have always existed; and that a majority of Americans, including gun owners, support new gun restrictions. Fact: (ProCon.org) the U.S. has the highest rate of firearm deaths among twenty five other high income nations, also not having strict enough background checks makes it easy for convicted felons and other people that should be prohibited able to buy and sell guns to unlicensed dealers in undocumented transactions that can never be traced back to that person. Out of a national poll, 92% of respondents, including 91% of gun owners were in favor of mandatory background checks for anyone who purchases a firearm.
