Transferable values like leadership and communication are not only applied to sports, but also constantly through school and the work place. Communication and leadership skills can be taught through teamwork. Teamwork consist of motivating others and working together to achieve a common goal. Teamwork also delegates duties and constructive feedback to their teammates. For instance, I did wrestling in high school and I became one of the captains during my senior year. I learn the essence of leadership and what it meant to be a leader for others. I serve as a role model through my diligence and discipline at not only practices and meets, but also during school. I motivated my teammates on and off the mat through my academic excellence. I am now currently the president of the Filipino student association at Houston Baptist University. Many of the leadership qualities I have acquired through wrestling is applied daily to the club I represent on campus. While these transferable values show great importance in sport, these values are also highly desirable in society because leadership foreshadows the potential impact the individual will make in the

Kids will always be kids, and part of being a kid is being able to go outside, have fun and get hurt, but there is always a line that must not be crossed. Kids and teens are growing human beings and their bodies are very fragile. If parents can stop their kids from specializing in sports early the number of kid-related injuries can be greatly reduced. One reason kids shouldn’t specialize in youth sports until they’re in high school is due to the fact that they’re constricting their options and choices. Another reason why kids shouldn’t specialize in one sport is that it takes a toll on the kids’ growing bodies.
In “School Should Be About Learning, Not Sports,” author Amanda Ripley explains her viewpoint about sports in school. She describes that in school the focus is less on the education and more on the “...pep rallies, booster clubs, trophy cases and cheerleaders decorating football players’ lockers after they fill them with brownies.” She thinks schools spend too much time on sports and less on learning and education. Ripley focuses on how children in school are playing sports that the “majority of kids will never get paid to play” in the future. Essentially, this means the students are wasting their time playing sports because most will never continue to play professionally.
“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, the power to unite people that little else has... It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers” (Nelson Mandela). Everyone remembers at some point in their life playing a sport, whether it be in school or to pass the time or on an actual sports team. Even in the case of people who have never played a sport, have at least seen a sport being played.
Part of being a successful athletic director is the ability to not only compete with your competitors, but also build upon positive relationships with them. Goff states, “We’re all competitors, but we consider each other colleagues first. It’s been good to go to meetings with these guys, and pick their brains on why we’ve been doing the things a certain way in the conference, and finding out what they’re doing” (Goff). This is clearly an important attribute of being a successful leader. It is essential in leadership positions to not only be able to compete with your competitors, but also to gain their trust and knowledge through mutual respect.

" In addition, physical activity enhances self-perceptions of one 's body, competence, and self-worth. The assumed association between playing sport and improved psychological and behavioral outcomes (or character) is at times challenged, despite the overwhelming directionality of the positive associations. Skeptics also say that many studies have failed to examine whether athletes had specific character traits before playing sport.
Media and sports are the two biggest influences on how people view themselves, or want to view themselves. According to the book Key Themes in Youth Sport by Ken Green, the youth is beginning to base their identity off of their success, achievements, progress, and self efficiency in sports. Several teens tend to find themselves, or start identifying themselves with a sport they are involved with. It is when the athlete starts becomes so significantly attached and associated with that sport identity, that they believe when they fail in the activity in which they are associated, their identity also fails, that is where the problem begins. Paul Stricker said, “It is necessary and critical that youngsters participating in activities and sports be given opportunities to succeed as well as chances to have a successful outcome from an unsuccessful event’ (Stricker).

Athletics of all kinds have started to consume students and the educational system. Football, soccer, track, basketball, baseball, and many other sports are being introduced to students during high school, and this leads to the goals of academic system being placed on the back burner. Funding that could be used to improve learning situations is wasted, the safe environment promoted by many schools is put at risk, and a separation between the students and responsibility is created when sports becomes the priority over academics. Although sports can provide an outlet for many students, “Mixing sports and academics can give kids the wrong idea about what’s needed to succeed” (Ripley) With education being second place to sports, high schools lose the opportunity to take advantage of their funding and resources. Youth athletics takes away from the child’s chance of discovering what they truly love; they could really enjoy something other than sports. If a child spends every Saturday at a competition and drives an hour every night for a practice that will last 3 or more hours, they will never get the chance to try new things; all of their time is consumed by the sport they are playing. A child could be great at performing and acting in plays, but they will never know because they were pushed into athletics before they got the chance to explore all of their options. The person who could cure cancer, may never get the chance to explore the opportunities science offers him/her. By forcing children into sports at young ages, parents have cancelled out
