Food within school lunches scares many as it is a growing issue that has already been present for many years. Poor food quality, management of cost, and choice of food all prove the growing need for improvement to school lunches. School lunch is a high percentage of most children’s daily calorie intake. Given this reasoning, it is of utmost importance to improve the quality of school lunches to ensure the proper growth and development of the next generations. Many schools face issues where vending machines and heavily processed food are prevalent. These are main contributors to a big problem many schools are facing, obesity. Obesity is a problem on the rise and wont stop until the quality of food is improved. “Fifteen percent of U.S. children and teenagers are overweight—triple the rate of 35 years ago, and a higher percentage than in any other industrialized country” found by the American academy of Pediatrics amplifies the thought that obesity is definitely a rising problem and is growing at a rapid rate (Harkin). A recent study tracked fourth graders going into fifth grade and found astonishing results in a bad way, “…where they gained access to school vending machines, snack bars and other food sources. As fifth-graders, they consumed 33 percent less fruit, 42 percent less vegetables, and 35 percent less milk than they did the previous year as fourth-graders” (Harkin). This shows the drastic change in children's diets when exposed to unhealthier food options. Also, most schools claim the food they serve and prepare is made from scratch but that is not the case. An example of this, “...she retrieved several five-pound bags of ‘beef crumbles,’ grayish-brown bits of extruded meat and soy protein, from a walk-in freezer and loaded them into a commercial steamer” is shown by this quote stating the beef that goes into the food into school lunches is bagged up and heavily processed (Bruske). Many students suffer from mental disabilities that are only more severe when they consume unhealthy food, like school lunch. Growing children are what they eat so when they eat unhealthy food they are going to see unhealthy results. “As the brain grows, it selects building blocks from among the fatty acids available in what the child eats” is an important piece of information when considering the brain is about 60% structural fat (Greene). So how much does
Ariana Cha combats a seriously pressing topic in her writing. While many articles are very quick to bash the school lunch program, while this article can enforce it. Cha is supporting the most common argument with the school lunch program, nutritional content. Cha is stating that the nutrients are offered, but are not being accepted by the students. The audience intended for this reading is, literally, anybody that disagrees with the provided meals.
Over 30.3 million kids in the U.S. alone eat free or reduced price school lunches, these lunches were meant to keep kids full and happy through the day but that might not be the case anymore. Millions of kids go to school every day and a big part of the day is when the students are able to eat lunch and socialize, but a problem not many people think about at school plagues the lunch room. Schools offer many different assortments of foods, including the high processed and fatty foods and snacks that not only can cause health problems, but can cause kids to feel sluggish throughout the day. School lunches need to include more organic and locally grown options instead of the highly processed foods currently served, because the it does not provide
Every day students enjoy their lunches at school. They always enjoy eating their delicious meals where they have the option to chose what they want. If their lunch is changed then their options will be limited. Changing the lunch to be healthier will not be something that will be very great for our school. If the school lunch is changed then some of the students that are larger could not get the nutrition they need and hurt the ones that really need those extra calories.

School Lunch menus need to be changed. Many schools plan on changing their lunch menus. When changing school lunches many students will lose some of their favorite foods. When the schools do finally decide to change the lunches, it needs to be a change for students, they need to be healthier and it needs to be something different for students.
Determining the healthiness of food being served to students during school lunches is a very important subject. Although eating healthy is important it should not be the only factor contributing to whether or not taking away students favorite school lunches is beneficial. I don't believe that it is a good idea to take away students favorite school lunches and replacing them with all healthy foods is a good idea because of these three reasons. One, the cost of the healthier food, two, the student environment and mood of the school, and three, the fairness to the students whose only meal is the lunch they receive at school.
Though new school lunch organizations provide a healthier, more proficient learning environment, they also promote realms of controversy over student meals. However, these conflicts are futile in comparison to constant concerns over global health issues, including obesity, anorexia, and even
In conclusion schools should not change the lunches because they don't have the power to tell students can or can't eat, they don't have the time and money, and finally because they are not allowed to put a limit on how much a student can eat due to the “No Kid Hungry
Dear Mrs. Denk, School lunches are much more important to students than one may think. Healthy lunches help boost students’ immune systems which may be vulnerable to common colds. Without good school meals students may have a difficult time concentrating, which I can say I’ve struggled with myself. Additionally, students from low income families will be promised at least one healthy meal a day, free of charge. If students are surrounded by healthy foods, they’ll want to eat healthier.
Being one of the highest profitable countries, the United States has been actively changing the way that school lunches are served all across America. The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act has played a major role in making school lunches healthier. This act prevents schools from excessively serving pizza, french fries, chicken wings and other savory foods (Murphy, 2015). Lunches now must be lower in fat, calories and sodium, therefor, lunches also must provide lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and wholegrain. The Food and Nutrition Service and the USDA, have put in place specific rules that focus on improving school lunches and breakfasts.
In some schools some principals superintendents have made a decision to opt out of the Healthy choice foods and make there own semi-healthy foods that kids like. To reduce waste and bring back students who have opted to pack a lunch or go off campus for fast food, his districts cafeterias have installed stir-fry stations with abundant vegetables so students can have meals made to order. and he’s added spice bars so kids can even the bland. In schools some principals and administrators are starting to take action.
Alyssa Wells, an elementary school teacher, noticed her students behavior shift following the implementation of California’s Universal Meal Program in 2022. “The kids are eating way more and they’re more focused, eager to learn and they’re just happier,” Wells noted, “they’ve got one less thing to worry about.” Daniela Solis, a single mother to an elementary school student, spoke of the program’s benefits to her son. “It gives all students access to adequate and nutritious food at school, as it should have always been,” Solis stated. Sarah Medellin, a parent with two daughters in elementary school, says the program made it so her daughters could get nutritious foods without having to expend her time or resources; “sometimes there’s no time for breakfast and sometimes by the second week of the month I’m short on money to buy healthy stuff,” she remarked.
It is not difficult to find rotten fruits lurking among a tray of apples and oranges. Due to their appearance, healthy options such as fruit are often discarded. It is the duty of the National School Lunch Program to provide food for students, yet the quality and taste of school lunches requires drastic
Although changing the school lunch to a healthier, better option would be a good idea, you should not change the lunch from what it is now. Even though the kids would be eating healthier, most of the kids that eat lunch now would not buy the new lunch, also kids not buying the new lunch means not as much money comes into the school, and if you want kids to be healthier all you have to do is give them more time to be active. To begin with, if you changed the lunch at school a lot of the kids that eat lunch now would not eat lunch if you changed it. The new lunches would not taste as good as the lunches they serve now. Taking away some of the kids favorite foods is not a good idea.
