Stimulants and depressants both are drugs that alter the natural functions of our brains thus, affecting individual’s feelings and actions. However, both drugs have different effects on the body. Stimulants are known as uppers, which means they have a stimulating effect on one's body. "Stimulants are the drugs that can keep you going, both mentally and physically, when you should be tired" (Hart & Ksir, 2015, p.122). For example, the drug amphetamine is classified as a stimulant, which would be prescribed to an individual with narcolepsy to help them stay awake and function normally. I know of several family members who have taken their child off of ADHD medication because their child was not their normal self when medicated. Also, working in the school system during my internship has allowed me to witness several students perform with and without medication. Typically, when students are medicated they are not their normal self. They are sleepy, not participating in class, and lacking motivation. Although, their behavior is adjusted, it really breaks my heart to see children like this. However, the day they forget to take their medication they are back to being their normal self. I understand that it may be difficult to handle a child with ADHD, but I don't believe that medicating children is the answer. I don't believe it's necessary for a child to take four different medications for ADHD, which is what I have witnessed. To me this is highly unnecessary. Furthermore, I don't have strong opinions about treating individuals who have insomnia with depressants, however personally, I would chose other methods before resulting to medication. My mother is prescribed medication to help her sleep at night and it works well for her. It all depends on the individual and their personal opinions. In my opinion, no these drugs should not be used to treat these disorders. I believe that alternative methods should always be taken before resulting to medication unless you have a serious condition, because
