Taking A Stand Is More Important Than Winning

In history there are a lot of great leaders who stood up for what they believed in and never gave up, such as the books A Mighty Long Way by Carlotta Walls LaNier and Little Rock Girl by Shelley Tougas. In the book there are young leaders who never gave up and had a great impact on young people. 14 year old Carlotta, was in the group with 8 other young teenagers who only wanted to make it to class. Just making it through the door of Central High was a huge relief. In 1957, during the integration in Little Rock Central High school, the media illuminated certain events but showed an inaccurate or incomplete picture of other events.

How important is it for a person to stand up for what he or she believes in? Barbara Johns had a lot of courage to plan a protest against segregation. Courage is the bravery to do something even if it frightens one. “Imagine This Was Your School”, a article by Teri Kanefield, contains all of the courage and bravery Barbara had to earn equality in schools. Kanefield gives evidence of the disrespect Barbara and the other students faced since they were black.

I believe that it is easy to say what is correct and to have strong morals, the hard part is the action and initiative. Being educated in a predominately white school has thrusted a role of independance and leadership onto me that I am grateful to have developed, even with the challenges that come along with that role. I was expected to represent African Americans and Hispanics when I was the only student of color in a class, even though that role was not for me, or anyone, to have. Although students of color in the future should not be forced to face this adversity, I believe that it is my job to take on this role in order to pave the way for those kids of the future. My ancestors have fought the entirety of their lives so that I could be where I am today and I will do the same.

Eleanor Roosevelt had once stated “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the think which you think you cannot do.” An interpretation of this is that the only way growth and courage can increase is when the time is taken to perform at the best state possible. This can occurs when there is a challenge which may or may not be extremely difficult, but you must push forward and come out ahead. The Little Rock nine had to endure going to school facing true hatred and constant denigrate each and everyday.

“Stand up for what is right, even if you are standing alone” is a quote by Suzy Kassen. This is a major theme in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Many people in life find it extremely hard to stand up for what is right because they may be going against peers and family. For a person, it takes great courage to do this but it gives them a sense that they are doing the right thing. The author, Harper Lee, disseminates the importance of standing up for yourself and what is right in many different ways.

How does one win and when has one lost? This question is not always clear-cut when applied to life and its many events, especially when a large portion of “happiness” or suffering is involved. When losing, one can learn important lessons that cannot be taught whilst winning and vice versa when winning. First, leaders need to respect the efforts of others in order to criticise them in an effective way, and secondly, when receiving criticism people need to respect that there are changes that need to be made in order to be better. Overall the marching band has taught me many lessons that I will carry with me throughout my life, and the three that stand out to me are having the ability to display positivity to help make it through anything, how to serve others as a leader and when it won’t be seen, and respecting things other than people, for example, the efforts of others and criticism. As a kid, my parents always taught me to stand up for myself and others. Basically they told me I always need to kindly put someone in their place. Whether I was part of the problem or not.
