Let’s Keep the Big Sticks Due to recent unfortunate events in America, a very popular opinion is that this country needs stricter gun control laws. While in essence this may seem like a good idea, as many would put it, “we do not live in a perfect world.” There are multiple faults to stricter gun control that would not benefit our country. With the unconstitutional proposal of stricter gun control laws comes insecurity, lack of self-defense, and the end of freedom. Insecurity The first and perhaps the most obvious reason stricter gun control laws are unnecessary is stricter gun control has proven to be ineffective. Chicago, the city with the strictest gun control laws in the United States of America just had a shooting. This shooting, a regular …show more content…
The United States of America is a free country with rights granted to the citizens in the second amendment of The Constitution to bear arms. Other countries have proven that with the mass removal of guns from society, enslavement soon follows. Take for example, Hitler. He took out anyone who stood in his way to reach the power he wished for and as soon as he got that power he took away all the rights to the citizens he was leading. One of the first things Hitler did to ensure his power was to take away any possibility of the citizens revolting by confiscating their guns. Another instance history has given us of gun control keeping the wrong people in power is Sadaam Hussein. He was head of the Bath party who lived extremely wealthy lives by oppressing minorities. He seized all guns in possession of the Kurds and Shiites. By taking away guns of these groups in the minority he easily tortured and executed all who opposed him. If we let the people in power take away something as simple as our right to own and possess firearms, we should prepare for sudden loss of the rest of our basic rights. In conclusion, gun control laws would not benefit our country as many would like to believe. They have proven to be ineffective, guns would be taken out of citizens’ hands not criminals’, and they are unconstitutional. Theodore Roosevelt said “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” How far will
Stricter Gun Control Laws: A Safer Society The debate over gun control has been a longstanding issue in the United States. With the rising number of mass shootings and gun violence, stricter gun control laws have become a topic of discussion. The question remains, would stricter gun control laws be better for society? This essay will argue that stricter gun control laws would indeed be better for society.
Gun control has been a controversial issue for many years. Many citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would reduce the threat of crime. People have the right to bear arms for protection, or even just the pleasure of hunting and recreational activity. With the recent events involving firearms and mass shootings, people are skeptical whether to increase or decrease gun laws. Americans have a constitutional right to own handguns and stricter laws and licensing will not effectively save lives.
According to the CDC, “Guns are responsible for over thirty-three thousand deaths in the United States annually. Gun Control is a set of laws that controls the use of guns by civilians. The Gun Control Act was signed as October 22, 1968 but was updated in 1993. As of February 23, 2018 seventy percent of people favor stricter gun laws and twenty-seven oppose of them. I believe that the Gun Control Laws should be stricter here around the United States because almost everyday something bad is happening by the use of a gun.
People are afraid that the government is trying to take away the ever sacred second amendment, and that without weapons, the ordinary man cannot protect himself. This, however, is not the case. Creating these laws would mean that criminals would be less able to commit gun related crimes, and those who abide by the law would still have proper protection. Even if criminals acquire weapons, people can still find protection in their weapons that they have. No matter what certain citizens view and believe, there are few critical downsides of gun control laws; on the contrary, the laws will provide more protection for the American people, and will ultimately show criminals that this country can stand up for
I think it is clear that America’s lenient Gun Laws have no doubt been a huge factor on the staggering amount of gun violence for a long time. I do believe, however, in people’s rights to defend and arm themselves, it is part of their constitution, I just feel that it is necessary that the laws regarding the 2nd amendment need to be reinforced and should introduce some restrictions to ensure that only the people who are mentally capable of wielding a firearm, without causing harm to society, should be allowed to acquire one. I do also recognise that there are already a staggering number of guns in the possession of the general public, and I feel that the only way to tackle this issue is cultural change in America, changing the views of individuals on the idea of guns, but change is always
Strict regulations and limitations have been pursued already and clearly do not suffice. Statics brought to attention by gun control opponents, show that gun control laws have done little to reduce crime rates. Several restrictions have been made on certain guns, considered as overly dangerous, though in the hands of an unstable criminal even a legal hunting gun can be deadly. Countless restrictions have been made, however people have still found ways around them. If people are unstable and determined enough, they will find a gun, regardless of the restrictions or regulations.
Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
In today’s society, one of the most alienating issues in American politics is gun control. More specifically, the issue is whether or not guns should be banned in the United States. Some people would say that guns should be banned because it would reduce crime as a whole and keep citizens safer. These people, enthusiasts of stricter gun laws, fear being safe in their country where there are so many people who have access to guns. Opponents of this argument, however, also fear losing safety.
Gun control also limits our constitutionally derived right to own firearms. If gun control is enforced, law-abiding citizens will be forced to give up their guns and their right to own guns, while many criminals who own guns may illegally keep theirs. As the saying goes “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Guns are an important aspect of our society in many ways. They allow for protection, recreation, and hunting.
In 1986 Ronald Reagan explained that while guns exist criminals will use them for their own gains but, in the same interview he also said that the only people who will be penalized will with heavy gun control are law abiding citizens. I believe gun control will solve some of America’s problems but an outright ban on assault weapons or firearms, in general, will make a bigger problem than it solved. Our forefathers believed that law-abiding citizens should have the right to bear arms to defend themselves against criminals and a tyrannical government. Mass shootings have killed hundreds in this country but a national prohibition on firearms won’t decrease murders in America. No one can deny that firearms are used to hurt or kill innocent people.
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.
Gun laws give too much power to the government and way less from the people, which will lead to government corruption. And, stated by ClearPictureOnline.com,”Guns don 't kill people, people do. We need to concentrate on the values and morals of our citizens and at the role the media plays in glorifying violence and the lack of respect for law.” (Shootout: Do We Need More Gun Control Regulations?) What people don 't understand is that they are taking away their own freedoms with Gun Control.
Everyday in the United States, ninety families are changed forever; guns claim an average of ninety lives every day in the United States, 33,000 lives in a single year. Gun control has been a debate in the United States for many years and is constantly thrusted back into the public’s attention by horrific shootings. These shootings constantly cause individuals to petition the government to place stricter and stricter regulations of guns. However, these policies cannot be the solution to this problem. To determine a solution that will be both effective and constitutional, we must look at statistics and research that has been conducted to determine the best course of action.
We hear every day the deaths of thousands of people occurring just because of misuse of weapons.. People shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns they shouldn’t be trusted in this. Stricter gun laws wills result into less shootings. One should not need such dangerous and harmful weapons just to protect themselves. We can only decrease the murder rate by making guns illegal to use.
Gun control is a very wide reaching and deeply rooted issue to the American people. There are arguments made by both sides, against and for gun control. Some proponents argue everything from the constitution 's wording and date to the very central argument of reducing violence when there are fewer guns. Along with all of these arguable benefits of gun control there are some justifiable disadvantages. Some opposition of gun control would argue that; guns are valuable for self protection, criminal will get guns no matter what, and lower crime rates with more firearms.
