The South's Foreshadowed Defeat It was well recognized that Abraham Lincoln took his presidency serious. Including the goals that he purposed to accomplished and tried his best to fulfill them. Two important reasons from Abraham Lincoln (which eventually led to the Civil War) were: forming unity among the union as well as freeing the slaves. The disagreement and distinct regions between the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South), overpowered the similarity they had of being from the same country. The Civil War was one of the most deadliest wars in history that lasting about four years. Although, both the North and the South had advantages those that the South believed would led them to victory such as; trained soldiers, prepared leaders and economic stability, had in time led to their defeat. To begin, with the first advantage the Confederacy displayed over the Union was the leading experience. The South had reasons to believe that this would be a powerful element, since Abraham Lincoln had no experience in military training. Even though, this seemed to be a beneficial factor to succeed at war, it wasn’t. Jefferson Davis was doing a terrible job, he failed …show more content…
They felt secure that the Confederacy soldiers had the benefit of prepared troops. Those who were raised in the South had the opportunity to learn skills with guns and riding horses, which prepared them for battle. Whereas the Union troops were industrial workers whom had not been prepared. They assumed that since the Union were conquering land they had to leave soldiers behind at some point to protect the land conquest. In which the Confederacy believed it was reasonable to wait, until the North became vulnerable and surrender. Which this plan didn't result during war, because they assumed that surviving and being experienced would be enough. Though their lost at war also resulted, because their was an outnumbered ratio from the
Reason 1: He was highly undersupplied and nearly won against the odds During the Civil War, the Union had a huge advantage in terms of supplies. They captured New Orleans, which was the main port in all of the South. It allowed trade to occur in the South. With the capture of New Orleans, the South couldn’t trade. As a consequence of that, the South couldn’t get any supplies.
The South had a greater advantage in terms of morale. They rightly saw segments of the North refusing to fight a war for slaves, no matter what Lincoln might say. It would affect the bottom lines of too many people, from wheat farmers in Iowa to factory owners in Massachusetts, who sent their products South for sale or brought cotton North for processing. The South had a stronger tradition of military leadership and a certain expectation of assistance from Britain, militarily and economically. Lastly, they thought that the North would attack first, giving them the advantage of fighting mostly on home territory in a defensive war.
Garrett Reppond Michael Shaara The Killer Angels Ballantine Books, New York July 1975 This paper is a review of Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels, which is a historically correct novel that has some fictional dialog. A lot of the dialog is fictional, but it is mostly backed with historically correct information and events going on during the time. This story is about the events and discussion of the strategy to be used by the Confederate and Union forces leading up and during the Battle of Gettysburg. This review will discuss two topics raised by Michael Shaara in the novel; the ongoing conflict between which fighting style and strategies should be used by the Confederate army, and the other is the state of mind of the Confederate and Union
Now four long years later after the war, the North has won the Civil War, there were many key factors to the resulted to the defeat of the Confederacy they were not fully equipped with the right tools for success and an army that wasn’t properly trained. The confederacy had internal conflict with the slaves, they wanted to have their freedom and not have to fight against the other side that wants to give them rights. The Confederacy had 1/3 the population of slaves who wanted to be free and not have to keep being treated badly. There were many ways that the Union army had the confederates at an advantage. The key factors that led to the Union is they were well prepared and had the resources in order to defeat the Confederacy.
1. North had Advantages over South The North had the numbers period. When it came down to men of battling age, the Union had the edge through around two to one. In any case, similar to I just stated, significantly more Southern men were ready (or even energized) to war. The North also had more noteworthy industrial limit.
Believe it or not many people create strategies everyday. A soccer coach will devise a plan to win the game. A student will create a strategy to get all their homework done before dinner. In the Civil War, the Union and Confederacy created their military strategies based on completing their goals. The Confederacy wanted to convince France or Britain to recognize and support its government (Aboukhadijeh).
“It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it.” These words were spoken by Robert E. Lee, a Confederate general in the Civil War. While the battles during the war were indeed terrible, there was also several aspects General Lee missed in his description. The need to constantly improve during the war allowed for several technological, pharmaceutical, and strategic advances nationwide. However, these changes did not happen overnight.
The South even had some good naval weapons such as floating obstructions, underwater mines, and torpedoes. The Union Army had trained professionals, but so did the Confederates! the soldiers had a strong will to fight, and they even had strong military generals that went to military school. Plus, the Confederates having farmers is a good thing.
At the beginning of the war, many men living in the Northern states enlisted in the army almost instantaneously due to the thrill of battle and adventure. Little did they know, that the war was going to cost a lot of them their lives. Soldiers not only listed for adventure, many enlisted for money and their ideals for example, abolishment of slavery, preserving the union, and etc. Compared to the South, the Union had many more soldiers, the Confederacy had to enforce drafting laws while the Union did not have to enforce them as strictly. Propaganda helped future soldiers find their will to fight and enlist in the army, posters and slogans made men and even women and children want to enlist in the army, and soon after the Emancipation Proclamation, former slaves also wanted in on the war.
Why the North Won the Civil War The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861. First battle no casualties until there was a gun explosion during the surrender that caused two deaths, through that incident, the Civil War began. According to Civil War Trust Approximately 620,000 soldiers died from combat, accident, starvation, and disease during the Civil War . The war ended on May 9,1865, which was a little more than 4 years after it had begun.
The Union and the Confederacy were fighting for their own acceptable intentions. The Union sought to defend the constitution and have one unified country. Nevertheless, the Confederacy felt endangered when Union soldiers were directed to their territory. So because when one feels endangered or threatened, one must have the sudden desire to protect. It is in the human nature to do so.
The North had advantages which consists of having a larger navy than the South and they were able to provide much more supplies than the Confederates were able to. The North did not have much worry for this war because they had Abraham Lincoln to their support and the South was just too confident that they were right and that they would eventually win. Other reasons as to why the Union’s victory was inevitable was because they had the means of transportation. They had railroads which helped them send out their goods and supplies for the war. They were able to communicate and treat their navy properly while the South was fighting the war without any preparations.
Who Has the Advantage? North or South? Did you know that the Union (Northern states) had a population of close to 21 million people whereas the Confederacy (Southern states) only had 9 million? This was including their slaves who made up more than 1/3 of the population!
The American Civil War took place between the years of 1861 and 1865 during this time Abraham Lincoln was president. The south was upset with the North and it was vice versa. South felt under represented now that Lincoln was president they felt they had no voice. But the main reason for succession was because they wanted to continue expanding slavery. When Lincoln was declared president the South seceded from the Union which would lead to the Civil War.
During the war both the Union and Confederacy had different advantages over the other. The Union had the industry to create necessities for the war such as guns, bullets, uniforms, etc. They also had a stronger navy for blockading ports from trade between the
