In Adam Winkler, a constitutional law professor, article “The Guns of Academe” states the negatives of having guns in college and universities. Showing the limits of positive views people have toward it. many negatives view of students and faculties feelings, age, and responsibility. He explains There are many articles that explain the positive views of having guns in a school environment. While on the other hand, there are many more articles that go along with Adam Winkler 's side for the negative views of having a gun in a school area. Gun violence in college and universities does not happen as often as killings in a home or on the street happen on a daily. Guns in a learning environment wouldn 't help out as much as if there were none. In countless articles and many places on the media scene, it is out there that having a gun is not as safe as having no guns. The are many negative views for those who believe in no guns. In Winkler 's article, he …show more content…
In another view, many of those who are on the board of having guns have limited reasoning. Winkler even states “On the Other hand , gun advocates are too quick to assume that laws allowing guns on campus will discourage mass murderers.” Even in Arizona, which was an example in the article, it had passed a liberal carrying law, and with that, there was still a shooting of a man hurting a representative and killing six other people along with it. This remark goes back to the last paragraph and how it could make a setting bitter and uncomfortable instead of having people feel safer because they would be able to “fight back”. Also in a shooting that could happen at a school people could have a gun on them and still would not be able to protect himself, but also can shoot a bystander because they could have thought it was the shooter. This reasoning is also a representation of how having a gun to protect oneself is a good idea. “...Policeman or other students with guns might not be able to differentiate among
According to Kenzie Kesselring, allowing guns on college campuses is a horrible idea. Not only is dangerous to college students’ well-being, but it also threatens the institution of collegiate learning altogether (Stroud, K.). Moreover, open gun carry can make students fearful for their safety; they will no longer be comfortable debating or being themselves. Some students might even be distracted knowing that at any moment someone in their classroom could be legally carrying a gun. Would you feel safe sitting next to somebody who holds a gun?
During recent years there has been an escalation of gun crimes. Due to the recent escalation of gun crimes arguments such as “Universities should/should not allow concealed guns on campuses,” have been brought up. Some states have now begun to change their gun control regulations on campuses, some have even pushed forth to allow individual institution to make the decision to allow guns on their campuses themselves. There are numerous arguments about guns on campuses. Some of the arguments for anti-guns on campuses are that guns will incite more violence and will possibly distract from the learning environment.
Concealed Guns Imagine this you're a student at ISU and concealed guns are banned on college campus while you are in class the weird guy in the back pops up and starts shooting people in a few seconds your dead or injured but maybe if guns were allowed on college campus when the first shot went off you or someone else with a concealed gun could have shot the man and probably saved many people's life. Even though this is not a true story this has happened at other colleges around the united states. Well are concealed guns good or bad are they useful or not. People say concealed guns owners are a treat or dangerous. With all these people saying they don't help the community there dangres the owners are a treat.
Teachers should not be armed in schools because the could not handle a real situation, and the liability is too much of a risk. To elaborate, it is widely agreed that a student’s well-being is a teacher’s concern. For six to eight hours every day for 5 days a week, the life of the student is in the teacher’s hands. However, a teacher has never been expected to arm themself to protect a student until now.
Parents feel that guns should be allowed on campus so that students and staff can protect themselves in dangerous situations and also by being an American citizen it is one of our Constitutional rights. Guns should be allowed on college campuses because they provide better safety for students, the second amendment, and when requirements for carrying a weapon are in place. The Second Amendment is the right to bear all arms. “Activities for conceal and carry laws on college and university campuses read the Second Amendment as an overarching right to have weapons, regardless of location.”
Once the Virginia Tech killer was on campus and began firing he killed 32 people, wounded 15 in nine minutes and still missed 73 percent of his shots and had 200 rounds remaining. Suddenly he realized that armed officers were approaching he turned the gun on himself and took his own life. Now what would have happened if once the shooter walked on campus and was met with one to two students that were concealed carrying. It would have saved many lives and if the school had passed the bill allowing students and professors to conceal carry it could have deterred the attack all together. Gun free zones appeal to only two groups of people: the utopian minded anti gun crowd and the killers with guns (Burnett 1-2).
According to Armed Capuses.org, “The overwhelming majority of the 4,400 colleges and universities in the United States prohibit the carrying of firearms on their campuses”. The controversy that surrounds the concealed carry on college campuses vary from negative comments to positive comments. The focus should not be would weapons make people feel uncomfortable like most articles are introducing. The main focus
Many people who read the article would be familiar with Columbine, the movie theater in Aurora, or some of the other university shootings that have occurred. By using those examples it shows that Goldberg researched the events that took place, and shares the experience of victims or family members to the reader. The events that occurred at every location imply that gun free zones are not completely free of those who want to commit a crime. In Goldberg’s statement, “There is no proof to support the idea that concealed carry permit holders create more violence in society than would otherwise occur,” (Goldberg 74) He makes an informed opinion on conceal carry permit holders.
The problem with gun violence in schools has existed for years, and something should be done to eliminate the problem that endangers students who attend schools every day. One recent incident with gun violence in schools occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School where several young children were killed and many others injured (Elliott 529). Also, a bombing incident in 1927 killed thirty-seven children and was likely the start of school gun violence (Elliott 529). Children, who attend schools, sometimes do not feel safe because of the problem with gun
Firstly, the arming of students, faculty and staff should be prohibited because its unsafe. The debate on whether staff, faculty and students should carry firearms on campuses has been going for years now. Some colleges have debated that a law should be passed were staff and faculty should carry firearms on campus, but other colleges have dismissed this case because it is dangerous and unsafe. According to Jesus Villahermosa’s essay “Guns don’t belong in the Hands of Administrators, Professors, or Students” he states, “I agree that allowing guns on campuses will create problems, not solve them.” This statement is true because not everyone is capable to handle a gun or even use one.
It states that our nation was in one of the worst spasms of violence with guns alone at colleges. This article also states that over the past few years, almost fifteen states have made it a whole lot easier for teachers, students and even administrators to carry concealed weapons on campus. Starting in August of 2016, Texas Lawmakers are going to make carrying a concealed weapon on campus legal. The main point I get from this article is that everyone thinks that the law enforcement should be the only ones to be able to carry concealed weapons on or around college
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
But there are lots of disadvantages as well. The reasons why we should not permit guns in college because it will cause more violence, students are not mature enough and it is not safe. Firstly, allowing guns in college campus will only bring more violence. One of the main reason for permitted guns in campus
In order to nurture a healthy learning environment at America’s schools and universities, it is critical that students as well as faculty feel safe on campus. Recent pandemonium of violent crimes on campus has many pro-gun activists suggesting that both the Students and Teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on
“Just in 2018 there has been 18 school shootings, on average per week” (snopes:How many school shootings have taken place so far in 2018). The incidents that have occurred have been a big impact in people 's lives. Yet no one with power has spoken about the problems regarding the recent shooting. See, there are two main sides of gun control, the side that agrees and the side that doesn’t. People who agree believe that no one should be able to own a gun, or that there should simply be stricter gun control laws.
