Unjust Seventeen years ago, high schooler Hae Min Lee was murdered and buried in a shallow grave. After a controversial investigation and trial, her ex boyfriend Adnan Syed was sentenced to life in prison. He was nineteen years old. But Adnan Syed did not kill Hae Lee; not only is there evidence to support his innocence, the evidence against Syed crumbles under pressure and the sole reason he was convicted is because the justice system failed him. Adnan Syed is speciously guilty of first degree murder of Hae Min Lee. Syed claims to have no recollection of the events that occurred on January 13, 1999 which, in some cases could be a way to further prove one’s innocence, but it also means Syed has no solid alibi to contradict Jay Wilds narrative of what exactly happened that day. If a person does not have an alibi verified with witnesses to counteract another person’s story claiming you murdered another person on a particular day, they are probably guilty of committing that crime. However, Syed was asked to account for a day that happened 6 weeks prior to questioning, it’s not irregular that he cannot remember specific details especially if it was just a regular old day for him. Nothing out of the ordinary happened that day. Lastly, there wasn’t enough witnesses that heard Adnan was leaving with Hae that day. There is not enough evidence to convict him of that murder. Primarily, because the only witness they have on Adnan is Jay. Many people have their droughts on Jay people believe he killed Hae Lee.

“ Okay, so no one actually testified at trial that they saw Hae and Adnan leave school together.” So nobody saw them leave together, that’s some evidence that Adnan didn’t kill Hae. Also some people said “They’re still friendly; several people said they couldn’t tell or didn’t know that Hae and Adnan broke up.” so basically they were still pretty close after their breakup so honestly there is no motive that Adnan would have used to kill Hae. In 2015, 149 people were cleared for crimes they didn’t commit after serving years of time (Ferner). In this case, Adnan Syed isn’t that lucky. In January 1999, Hae Min Lee went missing and was later found dead in Leakin Park. Authorities charged Adnan Syed, Hae’s ex-boyfriend, for her murder.

Her ex-boyfriend Adnan was accused of first degree murder, serving 30 years + life in prison because there was a good deal of evidence that are against him. There are many opinions and theories here on whether Adnan killed her or not. Adnan is guilty for acting suspicious.

Throughout Serial (podcast) we hear that Adnan pretty much had a lack of emotions for the death of Hae leading to him being convicted easier. Whether he was convicted for his lack of emotions or because of his religion or race, the system shouldn’t automatically focus on Adnan for committing the crime. Because of the lack of evidence and an untrustworthy source of testimony my stance position stands that Adnan Syed is innocent for the murder of Hae Min Lee. I believe Adnan was used as a scapegoat by Jay Wilds, a “friend” of Adnan's, whose testimony is the bases of the whole case against Adnan. Jay’s testimony is the most suspicious thing in the case because it's inconsistent and doesn’t line up with the timeline that was drawn up, making his testimony unreliable and even unrealistic. Can you imagine being charged for a murder that you don't remember committing? That is exactly what happened to Adnan Syed. In January of 1999 Hae Min Lee’s strangled body was found in a park in Baltimore. One of the main suspects was her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed, he was eventually charged, found guilty of first-degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison. Adnan Syed is not guilty of murdering Hae Min Lee and should be released from prison because the evidence against him wasn’t solid enough to prove without a reasonable doubt that he was guilty.

Putting these circumstances aside, it was said by many that the relationship was pretty typical and Adnan got over the breakup easily. This was said by teachers and friends of both Hae and Adnan. One of Hae’s friends, Becky, explained the relationship as “just a silly, teenage, high school, relationship” (Koenig “The Breakup”) which proves that Adnan was not as upset as the prosecution made him out to be at trial. Another notable aspect is that after Hae and Adnan broke up, Hae got in a small car accident and asked Adnan to come help her, her new boyfriend Don also showed up and confirms that him and Adnan had a cordial meeting and explains that they talked for 10 to 15 minutes even after the car situation had been figured out (Koenig “What We Know”). If Adnan was really that broken up about the breakup, he would not have been so friendly towards the new guy who seemed to take his place in Hae’s life.

Of course, many people think Adnan Syed is guilty of murdering Hae by contradicting himself, by saying, “I am in here for my own mistakes.” He might have been on the edge of confessing his guilt until Sarah caught this and asked what he meant, and quickly recovers from his mistake. Adnan also slips his tongue by saying that he wants people to only look at the evidence, and not his personality. If I were convicted of a crime I would certainly like to have my personality be looked at, if I were innocent. So they could see what good I have done.
