This is a great New York free tuition program that was introduced by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Students who already live in New York and will be able to attend college full will be able to benefit from this generosity. However, although this is a wonderful opportunity some students who desperately need it will not be able make use of it. Let us think of students who work part time or full time, or for some other reason can only do part time studies.

In a society that embraces the advancement of scientific knowledge, my desire to contribute in the field of science is incredibly strong. Specifically, I am greatly interested in the micro-sciences, such as biochemistry and general chemistry. These academic programs focus on the building blocks of all living and nonliving material throughout the universe. This research offers me endless opportunities to make a positive difference.

I am requesting this scholarship to help pursue my dream to become a registered nurse to be able to help and lead others. I want to be able to help people get well. Also to give premature babies a voice to be heard, and to be healthy to survive. I have always wanted to be a nurse ever since my twin and I were born at twenty-nine weeks in critical condition. We beat the odds and became two healthy baby girls.

First of all, I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to apply for the Clarence A. Hawkes Scholarship. With the cost of a college education increasing to new heights, scholarships become all the more important. I have participated in numerous and varied extracurricular activities throughout my life, and all these extracurriculars take up a considerable amounts of time. For instance, most days last Fall I would arrive at the school at 7:00 for marching band, have class from 8:15-3:20, cross country from 3:30-5:15 and then musical practice from 6:30-9:00. These time commitments taught me to manage my time and to never take weekends for granted.

I believe that I am deserving of this scholarship due to my financial status and my unique experiences that have shaped me into a strong, adaptable individual. Currently, I live in a household of five members, including myself. My family lives off one income as my mother is a homeschool teacher and my father works as a civil engineer. Prior to moving to Fort Collins at the beginning of my sophomore year, my father was laid off from his job and was unemployed for a year.

When I began the Minority Student Program (“MSP”), I had expectations that through the program I would gain insight into the requirements for success in law school. I was grateful that I was selected to participate, because I wanted to be fully prepared for the first semester. Fortunately, MSP introduced me to the law school community, allowed me to build relationships with my peers, and enabled me to thrive from the first day of classes and beyond. The program has made a tremendous impact on my first semester of law school. Additionally, I was welcomed into a community with a scope beyond the current MSP students and faculty.

There were few opportunities in such a small school, especially when it came to scholarships. I am eager to bring additional scholarship opportunities to my community college, starting with the Presidential scholarship from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) for which I could be the first awardee from McHenry County College (MCC). Once at IIT, I hope to challenge the status quo by developing a new innovative program as a collaborative effort between multiple disciplines.
