World War II was a horrible event spanning from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945. The causes of World War II were the Japanese expansion because they didn’t have enough resources for the amount of land and people that they had. So the they invaded Manchuria in 1937, And China in 1937. Another reason why World War II happened was because there were many dictators and they wanted to control more land so they all kept invading other countries. In Germany the Nazi party rose to power. The way Hitler became the dictator was that the Germans wanted their economy to increase and the national pride. Hitler said he could give them that. In 1934, Hitler became the dictator of Germany. Hitler began to rearm the German army so he could take over …show more content…
The first battles in the atlantic favored the Germans greatly. The Germans would use there submarines to sneak up on British ships and sink them with torpedoes. The Allies had no idea what to do and lost a lot of ships from the submarines. The German submarines were called U- boats, this was short for Unterseeboot, which in english meant under-sea boat. The Germans quickly bumped up the manufacture of their U-boats and had hundreds of submarines patrolling the Atlantic Ocean by 1943. The Allies tried to counter the U-boats by travelling in large groups called convoys. They often had destroyer warships that would help to escort them and defend them from attacks. For a while this method was a decent strategey in helping get ships through safely to Britain. However, as the Germans built more and more submarines the convoys became less and less successful. In 1943 the battle was at its highest point. The Germans had a large number of submarines in the Atlantic, but the Allies had broken the Germans secret codes and had developed new inventions for fighting submarines. The Allies used radar to tell where the ships were and new underwater bombs called Hedgehogs that helped to destroy the …show more content…
Over 30,000 sailors were killed on each side. The Allies lost around 3,500 supply ships and 175 warships, and the Germans lost 783 submarines. Allied planes used a large light called the Leigh Light to find submarines that had surfaced at nightime. Pearl Harbor: The attack on Pearl Harbor happened on December 7th, 1941. Japanese airplanes made a surprise attack on the US Navy that day. They destroyed a lot of ships and killed plenty soldiers. It was this attack that made the United States enter World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a complete surprise. Hundreds of Japanese bombers and fighter planes flew to Pearl Harbor and attacked. The bombers dropped bombs and torpedoes on the war ships, and the fighter planes attacked the United States’ fighter planes on the ground so they could not take off and fight back. There were two attacks and by the end of the second one a number of US ships were destroyed. Here are the casualties from both sides during the attack. Even though the Japanese inflicted a lot damage to the US Navy, they did not cripple them. They damaged many ships including warships, destroyers, and cruisers. They also destroyed a lot of the fighter planes and aircraft at the bases. However, all of the US ships but three (the Arizona, the Utah, and the Oklahoma) were able to be recovered and were used later during the
They either got torpedoed or bombed, but in the end it killed many
This battle consisted of naval and air bombardment. The battle was fought in a network of dugouts, caves, underground installations, and tunnels. Japan used one of their strategies by not fighting above ground. After about a month of fighting, the U.S. Marines wiped out the Japanese forces. The United States used about sixty-eight hundred tons of bombs.
The Germans used submarines that were called U-boats and other warships that destroyed Allied ships. The Battle of the Atlantic was an important battle that played a big role in World War II; the Allies were victorious over the Germans, which allowed them to keep Great Britain supplied, and they perfected the use
Merchant ships sunk went from 120 to 39, and 15 U-Boats would be lost. In total, Germany would lose 25% of their entire U-Boat fleet, leading their commander, Karl Donitz to declare “We have lost the Battle of the Atlantic.” Although the battle would continue for 2 more years, Germany was never able to threaten Britain’s lifeline again. The last actions would take place on May 8th, the last day of the war. The battle lasted 5 years and 8 months; from September 3rd of 1939 until May 8th of 1945.
By October, the U-boats were returning to the North Atlantic in force with attacks on transatlantic convoys being their aims and operated in the mid-ocean gap that could not be accessed by land-based air patrols (Gardner, 1996). This gave them the liberty to operate on the surface and gathered very large wolf packs, therefore, leading to the breaks in the escort formation and disorganization of the defense. In the spring of 1943, the convoy defenses were reinforced by a few aircraft patrol in the mid-ocean gap, which attested to be unexpectedly effective. A good number of U-boats were sunk, but they continued to attack until May when they were sent off from ONS 5 in the pivotal convoy battle of the war (Hackmann,
The war began because Germany had spiraled into an economic depression after WWI. According to Craig L.Symonds (2014)“The germans had just reached a population of around 65 million” and with their weak government the people were open to extremist ideas this gave Adolf Hitler the opening he needed to rise to power. Hitler rose to power as head of the Nazi party from 1934 to 1945. He initiated World War II and oversaw fascist parties that resulted in millions of deaths.(Adolf Hitler biography, n.d.).
There wasn 't much of a battle considering the fact that it was very unexpected and Franklin D. Roosevelt had just spoke to the Japanese and they seemed to be on good terms. The event only lasted around two hours and in that short amount of time 20 American naval vessels were destroyed, 8 battleships, and 200 airplanes. There were around 2,000 American casualties while 1,000 others were only wounded. The day after this attack the president of the United States declared war on
In total over 2,400 were dead, and over 1,000 were injured in the onslaught; the attack also saw the destruction of eight battleships, three light cruisers and destroyers, and four other naval vessels (Civil Rights, Japanese Americans). With the Japanese
During the war the Japanese carriers started to sink. June 7 the U.S begin to start attacking the Japanese after they have claimed to Islands. U.S ended up suffering 4 carriers. U.S ended up winning the war ending the Japan threat to the Hawaiian Islands and United States.
One of the major ways US forces combatted the U-Boat was by the use of Convoys. The Convoy system is a very old technique that was first revived to great effect during World War I by the US and its allies (Fontenoy, “Convoy”). The convoy system worked by simply grouping together ships to protect one another from a threat as a few ships working together to fight off a threat is better than one lone ship fighting off this threat (Fontenoy, “Convoy”). Convoys worked specifically well on U-Boats because U-Boats were built for offense and not for defense and so a few well placed shots could sink a U-Boat which was easier to provide with a few ships than just one. The convoy system had to be brought out again during World War I and World War
World War 2 started on 3 September 1939. Although there were many cause for the war, like the failure of the Treaty of Versailles, threat of communism, and appeasement. Hitler and the Nazi party were the main cause, they were linked with all other causes, making them stand out as the ‘main cause’. Everything that had happened after World War 1; the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, Communism and Fascism, all helped Hitler gain trust from the Germans, as he said he would ‘make Germany great again’. Starting another world war within 20 years of the ‘war that was meant to end all wars’.
1. There were many events leading up to world war 2. One of them was the treaty of Versailles which basically punished Germany for world war 1. Another event leading up to world war 2 was the appeasement-Britain and France leaders agreed to let Hitler take sudanland if he agreed to not create war but getting that land basically opened up other “doors” for Hitler. 2.
This is why I think that submarines were the best battle tactic in WW2 The basics of submarines is they were surface ships so they would be barely touching the water. There engines were also terrible because they ran on diesel but that ran out faster than ever but when those engines
Another cause of World War II was the Japan militarism and invasions in China in the 1930s. Additionally, another cause of World War II was that Great Depression left the world in a turmoil. The government was unstable, people were out of work, and trying to survive this terrible period in United States history. World War two had many causes as it was fought by the 2 Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, Japan), and the Allied Powers( Britain, United States, Soviet Union, France) , and considered the most traumatic war in human
Causes of WWII From the millions of casualties on the battlefield to the countless lives forever altered in the concentration camps, the Second World War was one of the most horrific scenes in modern history. This great tragedy was influenced by the Treaty of Versailles of 1919, Hitler’s acts of aggression, the failure of appeasement, and the inaction of the League of Nations. World War II began in 1939 when Britain and France declared war on Germany after Germany’s invasion of Poland.
