Meriwther Lewis suffered from depression, dementia, and had a history of alcoholism. Meriwether Lewis committed suicide. People have had multiple claims as to the reasoning of why Meriwether Lewis committed suicide. One being, “He was subject to periodic spells of depression and overwhelmed by personal problems after the expedition” (Suicide Theories). And another being, “He had a debilitating physical disease that caused both his mind and body to deteriorate” (Sucide Theories). These pieces of evidence support my claim because they give the opinions of people who knew Lewis personally and were around him. These pieces of evidence also support that Lewis suffered from depression and dementia from my claim. Lewis wrote a will which his friends found very suspicious. “Before he left for St. …show more content…
This piece of evidence supports my claim because it shows how suspicious it looked towards Lewis’ friends. It is very odd that Lewis decided to set a will, and then “coincidentally” passed away. To his friends it definitely seemed to be suicide. “His friends assumed it was suicide.” (Suicide Theories). Lewis was also an alcoholic during his lifetime. “Lewis was documented as a heavy drinker at times in his life, including the period immediately preceding his death.” (lewisandclarkmedicine.com). This piece of evidence supports my claim because it proves that Meriwether Lewis had a history of alcoholism and him being an alcoholic during his lifetime could have been a coping mechanism to cope with his depression, which once again leads to his suicide. Lewis also reportedly attempted to take his own life several times a few weeks earlier and was known to suffer from “sensible depressions of mind.” (Mysterious Death of Meriwether Lewis). This piece of evidence supports my claim since his attempted suicides were documented and proves that Lewis would take
In this video it states that Lewis was carrying secret and important information in said journals during his journey to Washington D.C. During this time he was still the governor and with his position he unintentionally took it away from General James Wilkinson; who was removed from governor of Louisiana by President Thomas Jefferson. Lewis had made himself a rival by just being himself. Because of his relationship with the president, his partnership with Clark, and his role in the exploration of Louisiana; he was known as a hero. But back to Wilkinson, who appointed Lewis’ military escort (James Neely) to protect Lewis.
But Wilkinson was very jealous of Lewis after he was appointed governor. Other theories regarding Lewis’s death claim that it was a suicide. While there is a few bits of compelling evidence there is copious amounts of evidence proving it was murder by conspiracy. To disprove the suicide theory, in the only examination of Lewis’s body claimed that he was killed by an assassin. And if it was suicide, why did all of his money disappear and Mr. Grinder just happened upon a great deal of money.
At the time he was the number one hero in America and no one from the government came to site to investigate, this makes it seem people from the government were involved. According to the Decoded video Lewis was carrying secret presidential codes on his trip to Washington. These two things make him a big target. According to Brad Meltzer from Decoded he says that some of the codes have been solved. These codes talked about who they could trust.
Historians have argued throughout the century’s weather Lewis’ death was a murder or suicide. I am here to rule out the suicide
But, before this expedition started, Rosellini was found face down in his shack with knife through his heart. It was determined the wound was self-inflicted. No suicide note was ever
The most important thing to remember of meriwether Lewis is his Expedition with Clark where he explored the entire west area of United states. I think it is important to learn about Lewis is his contributions to our country he is the reason our country expands to the
The deceased passed away on the 16 October 2012. The appellant subsequently claimed letters of administration on the grounds of intestacy. The appellant discovered a document of the deceased in an opened ‘L & C Blue Ribbon’ envelope amongst personal accessories of the deceased. Inscribed was the words, ‘the envelope contains the will of ‘.
Lewis could have stayed home, he was wealthy and owned plenty of land but he still decided to serve in the army and change
This alone can rule out the suicide theory, yet most people still believe that Meriwether Lewis’s death was a suicide. Another thing learned from the autopsy is that Lewis was shot in the back of the head. If this was a suicide, he would have to awkwardly twist his hand to shoot himself in the back of the head. Lastly, multiple sources including Decoded that it would be nearly impossible for Lewis to survive the first shot to the head, let alone, shoot himself again in the stomach. This is some proof that he could have been shot by the Grinders because he was staying at their house and this evidence shows that he most likely did not shoot himself.
You may or may not know who Meriwether Lewis is, but he has had a very important role in history, especially that of Louisiana, and the cause of death has been argued upon for years. He was a member of the state militia, he helped quell the Whiskey rebellion, a Pennsylvania uprising that was led against taxes, and he was a friend of Jefferson’s. Quite possibly his greatest achievements were governing Louisiana after the purchase, and the Lewis and Clark expedition. He had a major role in the Lewis and Clark expedition, which was to collect data of the plants, animals, and land forms he encountered. He had been picked by Jefferson to be the governor of Louisiana, he was travelling to DC at the time to have the government reimburse him for
Each time she told the story, it was a different account. If someone changes her story 3 different times, then they are not reliable. It could not be suicide because one shot from the horse pistol, which was the gun used, could kill in an
For the next year he spent time doing research on all the things that would be involved in the expedition. During this time, he decided how many men he would need, how big of a boat and with what design, what medicines, and also what instruments and books were necessary. Lewis did not just decide what to bring, but he took this time to learn many of the skills that he would need to use over the course of the journey. After a year, he had learned about botany, medicine, mathematics and fossils, as well as how to use all the scientific instruments that would be taken. Lewis was extremely meticulous in preparing for his more than two year voyage and this is partly why Jefferson chose him.
Lewis had a successful expedition and came across new discoveries. Before he died, he was on his way to Washington for financial problems. He was being denied money. Lewis stopped at Grinder Stand and that’s when everything went down. Meriwether Lewis was murdered by conspiracy.
The suicide theorm is primarly based off lewis travel companion james neely who quote the testimony of Priscilla grinder who was the “only” witness to his death she however, did not see it directly. Some people who are suspects in the possible murder suspects james Wilkinson an army general who once tried to separate from the US and start his own
Meriwether Lewis Meriwether Lewis was a very prominent man in the expedition to the Pacific Ocean and there were reports that Lewis was very suicidal and tried to kill himself twice. He helped lead the expedition and made many discoveries on water routes, Native Americans, animals, and went through many hardships in the journey like facing a bear, or facing a dangerous storm, which could’ve made him suicidal. But he was the governor of Louisiana and was a very important figure to the United States, he also sent secret code that showed he was on bad terms with Wilkinson. While Lewis was heading to Madison, Lewis presumably killed himself, but evidence shows otherwise. This essay will show you how Lewis was murdered by conspiracy because of physical evidence with additional evidence to back up my claim, and a counter argument to those who believe Lewis committed suicide.
